Soudal Firecryl FR - Fire Rated Intumescent Acrylic Sealant

Soudal Firecryl FR sets the standard for fire-rated sealants with its advanced formula and exceptional performance. This intumescent acrylic sealant and filler is designed to provide reliable protection against the spread of fire and smoke.

With its fire resistance capability of up to 4 hours, certified according to EN 1366 Part 4, Soudal Firecryl FR exceeds industry standards. It achieves this impressive fire resistance when used in combination with a PE backer rod, providing enhanced performance and peace of mind.

In the event of a fire, Soudal Firecryl FR exhibits intumescent properties. This means that when exposed to high temperatures exceeding 120°C, the sealant swells, forming a protective barrier that helps prevent the spread of fire and smoke. This crucial feature adds an extra layer of safety to fire-rated applications.

Apart from its exceptional fire resistance, Soudal Firecryl FR offers other valuable properties. It stays elastic after curing, allowing for consistent flexibility and accommodating potential movements or vibrations in the applied areas. Furthermore, the sealant is colourfast and waterproof once cured, ensuring long-lasting performance and protection against environmental factors.

Soudal Firecryl FR is user-friendly and versatile, providing primerless adhesion on most surfaces. This makes application quick and efficient, saving valuable time during installations. Additionally, once cured, the sealant can be painted over with water-based paints and varnishes, allowing for seamless integration with surrounding elements and aesthetics.

Product Benefits:

  • Resist the passage of fire and smoke: Soudal Firecryl FR is a highly effective fire barrier, limiting the spread of flames and smoke. It meets stringent fire resistance requirements, making it an essential component for fire-safe buildings.

  • Fire Resistant up to 4 hours with PE backer rod (EN 1366 Part 4): Certified to uphold fire resistance for up to 4 hours, Soudal Firecryl FR demonstrates exceptional performance and durability during fire incidents.

  • Intumescent in contact with fire: When exposed to high temperatures, Soudal Firecryl FR undergoes intumescence, expanding in volume to create a protective barrier and prevent the further passage of fire.

  • Swells when exposed to temperatures in excess of 120°C: Soudal Firecryl FR's unique formulation allows it to swell and increase in volume when exposed to high temperatures, providing an extra layer of protection during fire incidents.

  • Stays elastic and can be painted over: The sealant remains flexible after curing, accommodating potential movements and vibrations in the applied areas. Additionally, it can be painted over with water-based paints and varnishes, offering seamless integration with surrounding elements.

  • Colourfast and waterproof after curing: Soudal Firecryl FR retains its colorfastness even under prolonged exposure to sunlight. Moreover, once fully cured, it becomes waterproof, ensuring long-lasting protection and performance.

  • Very good adhesion on many porous surfaces: Soudal Firecryl FR provides excellent adhesion on various porous surfaces, allowing for versatile applications and reliable performance.

  • Can be painted over after curing: The sealant's compatibility with water-based paints and varnishes allows for easy customization and blending with the desired aesthetic.

Typical Applications:

  • Fire-resistant and smoke-tight interior applications: Soudal Firecryl FR is ideal for creating fire-resistant compartments, ensuring fire safety and preventing the passage of smoke within a building's interior.

  • Part of the 'Soudal Fire Range' assortment for penetration seals and joints: Soudal Firecryl FR is a key component of the comprehensive 'Soudal Fire Range' designed for effective fire sealing and joint applications.

  • Sealing of fire retardant joints in walls and ceilings: Soudal Firecryl FR is specifically formulated to seal fire retardant joints in walls and ceilings, contributing to the overall fire safety of structures.

  • Fire-resistant filling of cracks in concrete and plasterwork: This sealant is perfect for filling cracks in concrete and plasterwork, enhancing fire resistance and preventing the spread of flames and smoke.

  • Applications where the sealant needs to be overpainted with water-based paints and varnishes: Soudal Firecryl FR is an excellent choice for projects requiring an over-paintable fire-rated sealant, allowing for a cohesive and visually pleasing finish.

Substrate Suitability:

Soudal Firecryl FR is compatible with most common porous building substrates, including brick, concrete, cement board, plasterboard, and wood. It adheres well to these surfaces, ensuring a durable and long-lasting seal.

However, it is important to note that this product is not suitable for use on natural stone, bitumen, glass, and metal.

We recommend conducting a preliminary adhesion test on every surface to ensure compatibility.

Surface Preparation:

To achieve optimal adhesion and performance, it is necessary to adequately prepare the substrate before applying Soudal Firecryl FR.

Highly porous surfaces should be primed with a suitable primer, following the manufacturer's instructions.

The substrates to be sealed must also be clean, dry, and free of dust to ensure proper bonding. Any loose or friable material should be removed, and the surface should be thoroughly cleaned and dried before applying the sealant.

Application Method:

  1. Cut the Nozzle: Cut the nozzle of the cartridge at a 45-degree angle to control the size of the bead. The size of the nozzle opening should match the width of the joint or gap you are sealing.

  2. Load the Cartridge: Load the cartridge into the caulking gun according to the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure it is securely in place.

  3. Apply Consistent Pressure: Apply consistent pressure on the caulking gun trigger to dispense the sealant. Start at one end of the joint or gap and steadily move along its length.

  4. Fill the Gap: Apply the sealant directly into the joint or gap, ensuring it is completely filled. Make sure the sealant makes contact with both sides of the joint for optimal adhesion. Coverage of any sealant product varies depending on Joint Width and Joint Depth.

  5. Smooth the Surface: For best results, spray the surface with a soapy solution before the sealant begins to skin. This solution enables easy smoothing and ensures a smooth, professional finish. You can use a caulking tool or a wet finger to smooth the caulk and remove any excess.

  6. Curing Time: Allow the sealant to dry and cure according to the manufacturer's instructions. The curing time may vary depending on environmental conditions, but ensure the caulk is fully cured before painting or finishing.

Finishing:

Once the sealant is applied, it can be smoothly finished using the Soudaglatt Smoothing Tool or a similar tool of your choice. Simply run the tool smoothly along the sealant line to create an even finish.

If a smoothing tool is not available, a wetted finger can be used to achieve a similar effect. Perform the finishing process before the sealant begins to skin, ensuring a neat and tidy appearance.

Joint Dimensions:

  • Minimum Width for Joints: 5 mm

  • Maximum Width for Joints: 20 mm

  • Minimum Depth for Joints: 5 mm

  • Recommendation Sealing Jobs: Joint Width = Joint Depth. Use PE backer rods in case of large joint dimensions to avoid three-sided adhesion.

Cleaning:

Before the sealant cures, excess or unwanted Firecryl FR can be easily cleaned using warm water from both substrates and tools. Use a damp cloth or sponge to remove any stray sealant, ensuring a clean and professional appearance. It is important to clean the sealant before it fully cures, as it becomes more difficult to remove once hardened.

Remarks:

  • Do not use in applications where continuous water immersion is possible.

  • Do not apply when rain or frost is imminent

  • Firecryl FR can be painted over with most paints.

  • The paint should be sufficiently elastic to be applied on a plasto-elastic sealant. A preliminary test is recommended.
