The active ingredient in Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X is a powerful combination of Benzalkonium Chloride and Ortho Phenol Solution, delivering robust biocidal action against a wide spectrum of microbial contaminants, particularly surface mould, algae, and fungi. Benzalkonium Chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) known for its potent antimicrobial and surfactant properties.
It works by disrupting the cellular membranes of microorganisms, causing leakage of cell contents and rapid microbial death. It is highly effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi, making it ideal for surface disinfection in domestic, commercial, and industrial environments. Ortho Phenol, on the other hand, is a phenolic biocide that penetrates microbial cells and denatures proteins and enzymes, leading to irreversible damage and effective eradication of fungi and spores. Together, these two actives provide both immediate and long-term control of visible mould growth and prevent regrowth on treated surfaces.
At a concentrated strength of 11.9% w/w and a working dilution of 2.238% w/w, this combination ensures that treated surfaces are not only cleaned but also sanitised at a molecular level, offering long-lasting protection. The synergy between these agents allows MCS1 to act quickly on organic contamination while leaving behind a biocidal residue that continues to inhibit microbial activity, making it especially valuable in areas prone to condensation, high humidity, or previous fungal outbreaks.
When using Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X, appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) should be worn at all times. This includes gloves, protective eyewear and a suitable mask to avoid inhalation of airborne mould spores or contact with the biocide solution.
The product should only be used in well-ventilated areas. Do not eat, drink or smoke during application. Keep out of reach of children and animals. Always consult the product label and accompanying Safety Data Sheet prior to use for full guidance on safe handling and storage.
Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear is suitable for application to a wide range of hard interior surfaces affected by condensation mould. These include painted plaster walls, ceilings, tiled areas, sealed timber surfaces and wallpaper.
It is also effective on porous materials, though caution should be exercised on sensitive finishes. For wallpapered surfaces, the solution also acts as a stripping agent. The product is not intended for use on external surfaces or fabrics and is for indoor use only.
Before application, all surfaces must be inspected and visibly affected areas identified. Remove surface dust or loose debris if necessary. In rooms with heavy contamination, consider ventilating the space prior to treatment to reduce airborne spores.
For papered areas, do not remove wallpaper before initial spraying—this helps to reduce the risk of spreading viable mould spores. Ensure the area is free from excessive moisture and that surfaces are as dry as possible before treatment begins.
To prepare the solution, dilute one part of Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X with four parts of warm, clean water. Mix thoroughly in a suitable container.
Apply the diluted solution by spray, maintaining a distance of 3 to 5 centimetres from the surface. Ensure all visibly contaminated areas are thoroughly treated and extend treatment coverage by at least one metre beyond the visible mould to ensure complete sterilisation.
For severely affected areas, a second application should be made after 10 to 15 minutes. On painted and timber surfaces, the product should be sprayed directly and left to act. On wallpaper, apply liberally to assist with stripping, then bag and remove contaminated paper from the premises.
Once exposed, treat underlying plaster thoroughly before proceeding to any redecoration or surface repair.
Once diluted at the recommended 1:4 ratio, Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Solution provides an approximate coverage of 12.5m² per litre. Coverage may vary depending on the porosity, texture and condition of the substrate.
Drying time will depend on ambient conditions, ventilation and surface type. In most cases, treated surfaces will dry within 4 to 6 hours. Re-entry into treated rooms should be delayed until surfaces are completely dry and all airborne residue has dissipated. Do not paint or redecorate until the surface is fully dry and has been re-treated, if required.
Once the treated area has dried completely and any necessary reapplication has been completed, prepare the surface for finishing. Scrape away any loose or flaking paint and sand the area to achieve a uniform, clean surface.
This will promote good adhesion of any subsequent decorative finish. Previously painted surfaces should be lightly abraded to create a key for new coatings. If redecorating, it is strongly recommended to use Wykamol MCS3 Mould-Resistant Paint Additive in the topcoat to extend protection.
Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X is intended for professional use and should be stored securely in its original container between 5°C and 30°C. Do not expose the product to freezing temperatures or direct sunlight. For long-term mould protection, address any underlying issues such as condensation or poor ventilation.
When used as part of the complete Wykamol Mould Control System, this product can significantly reduce mould regrowth for up to five years, provided environmental conditions are appropriately controlled.
A) Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X is a concentrated, professional-grade biocidal treatment specifically designed to eliminate mould and sterilise affected surfaces. It is used as the first stage in the Wykamol Mould Control System to clean and prepare interior surfaces such as walls, ceilings, painted plaster, timber, and wallpaper for further treatment or decoration. The formulation kills mould spores at the root and helps prevent regrowth, particularly in areas affected by condensation or persistent damp. When diluted at a 1:4 ratio with clean water, it produces up to 25 litres of ready-to-use solution from a single 5-litre container, making it both cost-effective and suitable for use in domestic, commercial, and industrial settings.
A) Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X contains powerful biocidal ingredients that actively kill mould, fungi and bacteria on contact. The active ingredients—Benzalkonium Chloride and Ortho Phenol—work by penetrating the microbial cell membrane, causing the contents to leak out and effectively killing the organism. This not only removes visible surface mould but also addresses the spores embedded within porous substrates, thereby significantly reducing the risk of regrowth. The solution also acts as a surface steriliser, preparing treated areas for safe redecoration or repair.
A) Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X is suitable for use on a variety of hard interior surfaces. These include painted plaster, wallpapered walls, ceilings, tiled areas, timber frames, and sealed wooden surfaces. It can also be used on window reveals, doors, and skirting boards. However, it is not suitable for use on fabrics or exterior masonry, nor should it be used on unsealed absorbent materials without patch testing first. It is designed for internal use only and should not be applied to surfaces exposed to rain or direct moisture ingress from the outside.
A) Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X is a professional-grade biocide and should be used with caution. During application, the area must be well ventilated and all unprotected persons and animals should be kept away until the treated surfaces are fully dry. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn, including gloves, eye protection, and a suitable respiratory mask. Once the product has dried and any airborne residue has dissipated, the area can be safely re-entered. Always consult the product label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full health and safety guidance prior to use.
A) To prepare the working solution, dilute one part of Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X with four parts of clean, warm water in a suitable container. For example, mix 1 litre of concentrate with 4 litres of water to create 5 litres of ready-to-use solution. Stir thoroughly to ensure a consistent mixture. This dilution provides the optimum balance of biocidal activity and surface coverage for general mould treatment on interior surfaces.
A) The diluted solution should be applied using a low-pressure spray, sponge or brush. For spraying, hold the nozzle 3 to 5 centimetres from the surface and apply evenly to all visible areas of contamination. Ensure that you also treat a surrounding margin of at least one metre beyond the visibly affected area to prevent unseen spores from escaping treatment. Severely affected areas may require a second application after 10 to 15 minutes. For wallpapered surfaces, apply liberally before removal to reduce the spread of spores during stripping.
A) Once diluted to the recommended ratio of 1:4, Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X provides a coverage rate of approximately 12.5 square metres per litre of ready-to-use solution. This means a full 5-litre container of concentrate will yield around 62.5 square metres of treated surface area when properly diluted. Coverage may vary depending on surface porosity, texture, and level of contamination.
A) Under standard indoor conditions, treated surfaces typically dry within 4 to 6 hours. However, this may vary depending on ambient temperature, humidity, and the absorbency of the surface. It is essential that surfaces are fully dry before carrying out any further treatment, repair or decoration. Re-entry to treated rooms should be delayed until surfaces are completely dry and there is no trace of airborne residue.
A) Yes, painting can be carried out once the surface has completely dried and, if necessary, been lightly abraded to create a key for the new paint. However, for best results and prolonged mould resistance, it is highly recommended to use Wykamol MCS3 Mould-Resistant Paint Additive mixed into the final coat of paint. This will help ensure long-term protection and prevent mould regrowth beneath the new decorative finish.
A) Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X is especially effective against black mould (Stachybotrys Chartarum, Apsergillus Niger), which is commonly associated with condensation in bathrooms, kitchens and poorly ventilated spaces. Its deep-penetrating biocidal formula kills the mould at its source and prevents regrowth, providing a clean and hygienic surface ready for redecoration or maintenance.
A) Yes, this is one of the recommended applications. If mould is visible on wallpaper, it is important not to strip it off dry, as this can release dangerous spores into the air. Instead, Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear 5X should be diluted and applied generously over the wallpaper first. This helps kill surface and embedded spores, making the paper safer to handle during removal. The underlying plaster should also be treated once exposed.
A) Absolutely. Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X is ideal for use in high-humidity environments such as bathrooms and kitchens, where condensation is a common cause of mould. Its powerful biocidal agents effectively eliminate mould spores on walls, ceilings and around window reveals, creating a clean surface that is safe for redecoration.
A) Before application, inspect the area and identify the extent of mould contamination. Remove loose surface dust and debris if present. Ensure the surface is dry to allow proper adhesion and absorption of the solution. Ventilate the room where possible and wear suitable PPE to protect against mould exposure and the biocidal solution. For wallpapered areas, treat the surface before attempting removal to reduce airborne spore release.
A) Yes, it can be used on porous surfaces such as plaster and wood, though caution is advised as the product may absorb more rapidly and drying times could be extended. Always conduct a small test in an inconspicuous area if unsure of how the surface will react. Avoid use on soft furnishings or unsealed materials that may retain the biocide unnecessarily.
A) When used as part of the full Wykamol Mould Control System, including MCS3 Paint Additive, and in combination with adequate ventilation and humidity control, treated surfaces can remain mould-free for up to five years. However, environmental conditions play a critical role, and ongoing issues such as leaks or persistent condensation must be addressed for long-term results.
A) Yes, Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X is fully compliant with UK biocide regulations and carries HSE approval under registration number 7667. This means it has undergone rigorous testing and evaluation to ensure it is safe and effective when used as directed. Users must still follow all health and safety guidelines provided on the label and SDS.
A) Yes, the product should be stored in its original container with the lid tightly sealed in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight or freezing conditions. Storage temperature should remain between 5°C and 30°C. When stored correctly, the concentrate will remain stable and effective for an extended period. Do not decant into unlabelled containers or mix with other chemicals.
A) The main active ingredients are Benzalkonium Chloride and Ortho Phenol Solution. Benzalkonium Chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound that targets bacterial and fungal cell membranes, while Ortho Phenol acts by denaturing essential enzymes and proteins within microbial cells. Together, they provide fast-acting and long-lasting protection against a wide spectrum of mould and fungal contaminants.
A) Unlike many consumer-grade mould sprays that only remove surface staining, Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X is a high-strength professional biocide designed to eradicate mould at its source. It provides deep substrate penetration, sterilises the surface, and offers long-lasting control when combined with other products in the Wykamol Mould Control System. It is also HSE approved and trusted by contractors and damp specialists for its proven performance.
A) While it is most effective when used as part of the Wykamol Mould Control System, Wykamol MCS1 Mould Clear Concentrate 5X can also be used on its own for spot treatments or interim mould control. It provides excellent cleaning and sterilisation results as a standalone product, especially in areas where more extensive remediation is not feasible. For ongoing mould resistance, it should ideally be followed up with preventative measures such as improved ventilation and anti-mould paint treatments.
