Soudal Vapourseal is suitable for use on a wide range of vapour barrier membranes including polyethylene (PE), polyamide (PA), polypropylene (PP), aluminium, EPDM, and PVC. It also adheres well to a variety of construction surfaces such as plaster, brickwork, concrete, wood, insulation boards, plasterboard, and fibre cement.
The sealant performs reliably even on slightly damp surfaces. No special pretreatment is necessary; however, to ensure optimal adhesion and compatibility, it is recommended to conduct a preliminary adhesion test on each substrate before full application.
All surfaces must be clean, dry (or only slightly moist), and free from dust, grease, oil, loose debris or other contaminants that could impair adhesion. It is important to ensure that the vapour barrier membrane and any adjoining substrates are structurally sound and free from movement at the time of application.
While pre-priming is generally not required, surfaces should be wiped down if contaminated, particularly if they have been exposed to prolonged dust or construction debris.
Using a standard caulking gun, apply Soudal Vapourseal directly to one edge of the vapour barrier membrane in a continuous adhesive bead of approximately 5mm in diameter.
Press the vapour barrier into place against the receiving substrate, ensuring enough slack or flexibility is left in the membrane to accommodate any future structural movement. The adhesive should not be completely flattened during application.
An adhesive thickness of 1 to 2mm must be maintained throughout the bond line to ensure effective performance.
It is also important to ensure the bonded section of the membrane has a minimum width of 25mm to guarantee airtight and vapour-resistant sealing in accordance with recognised standards.
Once the membrane is in place and correctly adhered, no further finishing processes are required. Do not overwork the adhesive bead or attempt to level it flat, as this can compromise the required adhesive thickness and reduce its performance. Allow the product to dry naturally. Avoid exposure to water or heavy movement until the sealant has fully cured.
Uncured Soudal Vapourseal can be easily removed from tools, hands, and adjacent surfaces using Soudal Adhesive Remover or Soudal Swipex Cleaning Wipes. Once cured, the adhesive can only be removed mechanically. Ensure tools are cleaned immediately after use to prevent permanent contamination.
Soudal Vapourseal should be stored in its original packaging in a cool, dry location at temperatures between +5°C and +25°C. The product must be protected from frost at all times. When stored under appropriate conditions, it maintains its quality and application performance within the shelf-life specified on the packaging.
The open time at 23°C and 55% relative humidity is approximately 60 minutes, and the product dries at a rate of approximately 2mm per 24 hours, depending on environmental conditions. Avoid applying the product in temperatures below +5°C or above +35°C, and ensure all applications are completed in dry conditions for optimal curing.
If used correctly, Soudal Vapourseal provides a reliable, air- and vapour-tight seal in line with standards such as DIN4108-7 and EN 13829, contributing to long-term building performance and energy efficiency.
A) Soudal Vapourseal is a ready-to-use, single-component acrylic adhesive sealant developed specifically for creating airtight and vapour-tight seals in building construction. It is used to bond vapour control membranes to building substrates and to seal overlaps, junctions and penetrations within vapour barrier systems. The product ensures that moisture and air cannot pass through these critical points, thereby contributing to a building’s energy efficiency and reducing the risk of condensation-related issues within the structure. Suitable for use in both new builds and renovations, it forms a key component of high-performance airtight building envelopes.
A) Soudal Vapourseal helps improve a building’s energy efficiency by creating an uninterrupted seal around vapour control layers, reducing air leakage and uncontrolled heat loss. By sealing joints, penetrations and overlaps in vapour barrier membranes, it ensures that warm, humid air cannot escape through the building envelope or infiltrate from outside. This helps to maintain stable internal temperatures, reduce heating and cooling demands, and minimise the risk of interstitial condensation which could otherwise compromise insulation materials. In this way, Vapourseal supports compliance with energy performance standards and building regulations.
A) Soudal Vapourseal has excellent adhesion to a wide range of vapour control membranes including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), EPDM, PVC, and aluminium foil. It also adheres strongly to common construction substrates such as wood, plasterboard, brickwork, concrete, fibre cement, plaster, insulation boards and untreated timber. It is even capable of bonding effectively to slightly damp surfaces, which is particularly beneficial in construction environments where achieving complete dryness can be difficult.
A) Yes, Soudal Vapourseal is designed to adhere reliably even to slightly moist surfaces. This makes it highly practical on-site, especially during cold or humid conditions when achieving fully dry substrates may not be feasible. However, surfaces should still be free from standing water, grease, dust, or loose debris to ensure optimal performance and adhesion.
A) Yes, Soudal Vapourseal is solvent-free and contains no isocyanates or plasticisers, making it a low-emission, environmentally responsible choice for indoor applications. It is ideal for use in residential settings, schools, healthcare facilities, and energy-efficient constructions like passive houses. Its non-toxic formulation ensures it will not release harmful vapours, contributing to good indoor air quality during and after application.
A) Soudal Vapourseal is formulated to remain permanently flexible once cured. Its plasto-elastic properties allow it to accommodate minor building movement and expansion without cracking or compromising the seal. This flexibility is essential in maintaining long-term vapour and airtightness across joints, overlaps, and around service penetrations.
A) Absolutely. Soudal Vapourseal is ideally suited to both new builds and energy retrofits, where airtightness is a key objective. In retrofit projects, it is especially valuable for sealing previously overlooked junctions, penetrations, and areas with inconsistent construction. Its compatibility with various substrates and membrane types allows for efficient upgrading of existing buildings to modern airtightness standards.
A) Soudal Vapourseal should be applied using a standard caulking gun in a continuous bead of around 5mm diameter along the edge of the vapour barrier membrane. The membrane is then pressed into place against the substrate, maintaining an adhesive thickness of 1 to 2mm throughout the bond line. Avoid fully compressing the sealant and ensure a minimum overlap width of 25mm to achieve the necessary vapour and airtight seal.
A) All application surfaces must be clean, free from loose dust, oil, grease, or other contaminants. While Vapourseal does bond to slightly moist substrates, any standing water or heavy contamination must be removed. Pre-priming is not usually necessary, but surfaces should be wiped down if they have been exposed to prolonged dust or construction debris. For best results, a test application is advised if substrate compatibility is uncertain.
A) The sealant typically cures at a rate of approximately 2mm per 24 hours under standard conditions (23°C and 55% relative humidity). The open time—meaning the working time before skin formation—lasts up to 60 minutes, which allows ample time to make any necessary adjustments during installation. Full curing time will depend on bead thickness, temperature, and humidity levels.
A) Yes, Soudal Vapourseal has good UV resistance, making it suitable for use in areas where incidental UV exposure may occur. However, it is not intended as a topcoat or exterior finish and should not be left exposed for extended periods. In standard internal building applications or areas shielded from direct sunlight, it performs reliably over the long term.
A) No, Soudal Vapourseal is not designed to be overpainted. As a vapour barrier adhesive sealant, it is intended to remain part of the concealed internal building fabric, typically behind plasterboard or beneath insulation layers. Attempting to paint over the sealant may affect the finish and adhesion of decorative coatings and is not recommended.
A) Uncured Soudal Vapourseal can be cleaned from tools and surfaces using Soudal Adhesive Remover or Soudal Swipex Cleaning Wipes. It is important to clean tools immediately after use to prevent the adhesive from curing on them. Once the product has cured, mechanical removal is required, as the sealant cannot be dissolved after full curing.
A) The coverage of Soudal Vapourseal depends on the width and thickness of the adhesive bead and the surface conditions. As a guideline, one standard 310ml cartridge will typically provide approximately 15 to 20 linear metres of a 5mm bead. Ensure that each joint or overlap is fully covered with the appropriate bead thickness to achieve a complete seal.
A) Soudal Vapourseal can be applied in temperatures between +5°C and +35°C. Below +5°C, curing slows significantly and adhesion may be impaired, so application during freezing conditions is not recommended. The product should also be stored above freezing to maintain consistency and prevent separation or thickening of the sealant in the cartridge.
A) Yes, Soudal Vapourseal is certified for airtight and vapour-tight performance in accordance with European standards such as DIN 4108-7 and EN 13829. These standards are widely recognised in energy performance and airtightness testing frameworks and align with UK building regulations relating to energy efficiency, moisture control, and indoor air quality.
A) Once fully cured and protected within the building envelope, Soudal Vapourseal offers long-term durability and performance, often exceeding the lifespan of the building materials it is bonded to. Its flexibility and resistance to cracking ensure that the seal remains intact under standard conditions for many years, especially when installed correctly and not exposed to direct mechanical stress or long-term UV.
A) During application, wear gloves and avoid skin contact where possible. Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling any residual fumes. Do not smoke, eat or drink while applying the sealant. Protect surrounding surfaces such as windows or sensitive materials from contact with the sealant by masking off as needed. Always follow guidance on the label and consult the safety data sheet for detailed safety instructions.
